Description

A.P. Hill Letter Signed. One page, 7 ¼ x 7 inches, Fort Clinch; January 29, 1850. Letter addressed to "Messrs J. Earle & Co" that reads, in part, "I have received your acknowledgement of my pay account - With my bill - You will oblige me by sending me my bill made out in detail, as according to my memorandum, twas $83 principal - You have it $112 - You have also charged me three years interest, when I graduated in /47, and interest after six months, would according to my understanding, be two years." Signed, "A.P. Hill / Lieut 1st Art."

Before Hill rose through the ranks of the Confederate Army, he served in garrisons along the Atlantic Coast. Hill appears to be writing about debts incurred likely during his years at West Point as he makes reference to his year of graduation, 1847. Hill was stationed at Fort Clinch before fighting in the Third Seminole War from 1855 to 1858.

Condition: Creased along folds with two very small closed tears along the left and right margins. Discoloration to the upper left and right corners. Residue and remnants along top margin verso from previous mounting with pencil notation at center verso.
