Description

[Tennessee Williams]. 1936 Corona Junior (Serial Number 1F9874J). 12 1/2" (L) x 11 1/4" (W) x 5" (H). Black ribbon. Normal wear from use.

Tennessee Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams III, is one of the most well-known American playwrights of the twentieth century. The present typewriter was apparently discovered in the basement of his mother's home in Clayton, Missouri.

Included in this lot is a letter of provenance from one Edwynne C. Murphy. In 1974, Mr. Murphy purchased the former home of Tennessee Williams from his aging mother, Mrs. Edwina Dakin Williams. The letter explains that the purchase of the house included "all the furnishings, pictures, rugs, piano, books and memorabilia." While much of the collection was later sold at auction in May of 1985, the buyer retained the typewriter among a few items held back from the sale. The buyer affirms, "I guarantee that this typewriter was owned and used by Tennessee Williams during his visits with his mother." Accompanied by related ephemera.

Provenance: From The Soboroff Typewriter Collection
