[John Cheever]. 1936 Underwood Universal Portable (Serial Number F933583). 12 1/2" (L) x 10 1/2" (W) x 6" (H). Black ribbon. Normal wear from use.

John Cheever, acclaimed author of five novels and over 200 short stories, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1979. Accompanying his 1936 Underwood Universal Portable typewriter are other mementos from his working desk, including a gold lamp, telephone, and even a phone bill. His daughter, Susan Cheever, was instrumental in The Collection's acquisition of this typewriter. Some of Cheever's works are also included in this lot.
