Description
The Embryo of the Voice of the Negro, February 1927. Four pages, 9.25" x 12.5", New York; February 1927. Vol. 1, No. 1, printed by Hubert Harrison. It served as a proposal for a new magazine Harrison wished to found, although he died less than a year after this was published. Includes articles such as "What This Race Really Needs is a Good Magazine," "Lincoln and Douglass," "On Reading Negro Books," and a critical piece on Lincoln titled, "Martyred President was Not an Abolitionist..." This very copy is the only one known, and last appeared at auction in 2008 when it sold for $3,840.Condition: Lightly rubbed with minor edgewear.
More Information: Hubert Harrison (1883-1927) was a West Indian and American writer, intellectual, and race-conscious political activist. Considered "The Father of Harlem Radicalism," he worked as an editor for New Negro magazine and Marcus Garvey's newspaper, Negro World. In later life, Harrison also wrote extensively for other newspapers, including the New York World. He founded the Liberty League and the Voice: A Newspaper for the New Negro.
