Description
Ulysses S. Grant Carte de Visite Signed "U.S. Grant Maj: Gen. U.S.A." 2.5" x 4", with a Barr & Young Army Photographers, Memphis imprint on verso. A vignette portrait of the famous Union general and future U.S. president. On verso has been written, "Genl Grant sent this photograph to my Mother from 'before Vicksburgh' [sic] at the time of the Siege. S.B.J."Grant (1822-1885) served in the Mexican War, but truly made his mark in the Civil War. He won the first significant Union victory at Fort Donelson. At Shiloh, he took heavy losses but was victorious, and in July 1863 forced Vicksburg to surrender. He chased Lee throughout Virginia, including the Wilderness and Petersburg, and accepted his surrender at Appomattox. In 1868, he won the Presidential election, and his presidency saw the continuation of Reconstruction, the signing of a gold currency law, and the Panic of 1873. His administration was affected by several scandals, though Grant was never involved. In true timely fashion, he finished his memoirs a week before he died. From the Bret J. Condition: Lightly toned throughout, with rounded corners. Minor soiling at the edges. The lower left corner of the albumen is lightly creased. "For Mother" is written in pencil on verso in an unknown hand. Else very good.
