Description
Ulysses S. Grant Wearing Mourning Band Carte de Visite Signed "U.S. Grant Lt. Gen. U.S.A." 2.5" x 4", with a John W. Pittock, Pittsburgh imprint on verso. A three-quarter standing portrait of Grant, dressed in his lieutenant general's uniform with one hand tucked into his vest and the other into his pants' pocket. On his left arm, a black crepe mourning band is visible, with the ties hanging down loose. The photograph was taken shortly after President Lincoln's assassination. Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) was promoted by Lincoln to Lieutenant General on March 2, 1864. The position, which had previously only been held by George Washington, gave Grant full command of the Union armies. Lincoln was killed just five days after Grant had successfully brought about Lee's surrender at Appomattox. The president had in fact invited Grant and his wife to attend the play at Ford's Theater with him, but the couple declined due to previously made travel plans. Many believe that Grant had also been a target in the assassination plot. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.Condition: Toning throughout, with light foxing and spotting throughout. Minor wear and soiling at the edges and corners. Boldly signed. On verso, the imprint is cut so that some of the writing is cropped off. Overall good.
