Description

Appomattox Court House Parole Issued to Private D. S. McIver. One partially printed page, 8 x 3 inches; Virginia; April 10, 1865. Signed at the conclusion by S. H Crump, as Captain Commanding Battalion. McIver was a member of Company A, 12th Battalion of the Georgia Light Artillery. The unit had six officers and 125 men at the time they surrendered. With a bold endorsement on the recto recording "3637 Atlanta. 23 Apl 65 / Transp[ortation] in Kind / to West Point [Georgia]" and five period annotations recording the number of rations and dates issued to McIver as he made his way home. An additional stamped docket engrossed by hand reads that he was furnished transportation on April 20,1865.

We could not locate McIver's service records, but the 12th Battalion, Georgia Light Artillery fought at Cold Harbor, and under Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley in addition to Appomattox.

Condition: Heavy wear and soiling; with partial separation at the folds. The ink of both the printing and initial engrossment and issuing signature are light, but this is not due to fading as the other period annotations remain bold.
