Description

George Read Autograph Document Signed. One page, 8 ¼ x 4 inches, no place; September 23, 1785. Promissory note that reads, "Borrowed & received of Capt. Jonathan Robinson repaid in twenty days." Signed, "Geo: Read of N. Castle." Accompanied by an engraving of Read by J.B. Longacre.

Read served in numerous capacities during the American Revolution. He is one of only two founding fathers to sign the Petition to the King, the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States. At the time he signed this note, Read served on the Legislative Council of the Delaware General Assembly.

Condition: Lightly toned and creased along folds. With offsetting; upper left corner has been torn away and replaced. Slight residue and archival tape on verso.
