Virgil Earp transmits two licenses for "House[s] of Ill Fame"

Virgil Earp Autograph Letter Signed Transmitting Two Licenses for "Houses of Ill Fame" Located on Allen Street. One page, 7 ¼ x 9 ¼ inches; Tombstone; September 21, 1881. Earp writes to city auditor S.B. Chapin: "I return herewith two licenses with the following information (Mrs Hulbert) No 591^ Refused payment. Party claims she is not in the business indicated but to the best of my knowledge & belief this statement is false. (Emma) No 593^ Should be canclled [sic] as party has left town." Signed, "V. W. Earp / City Tax Collector."

License number 591 is included with the lot (7 ¾ x 4 ½ inches) and is issued to Mrs. Hulbert with a handwritten and signed note by Earp that reads, "Refused Payment says she is living private V W Earp City Tax Collector." Unfortunately, Earp's note and the entire engrossment have been traced in modern ink.

Allen Street was the main thoroughfare of Tombstone and was known for its rowdiness and lawlessness. The O.K. Corral is located on Allen Street and was the site of the famous gunfight that would secure Earp's legacy in the annals of Western lore a month after the date of this letter.

Condition: Letter has toning and a few stray stains. Wear along the folds, with two old tape reinforcements on the verso. Three mounting remnants along the bottom on the recto. City license has stray stains and creasing, with all engrossment and Earp's note traced in modern ink.
