Description
Ingraham Family Civil War Era Autograph Albums. An expansive and extraordinary collection containing 225 autographs almost entirely relating to Civil War. Among these are seven Presidential autographs from Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, and William McKinley. It also includes five vice presidents, seventy-five cabinet members spanning multiple administrations, fifty-four Civil War Generals, thirty-seven additional Civil War officers, six Medal of Honor recipients, forty-five senators, forty-six congressmen, and six supreme court justices, among several others. Just a few highlights include Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, William T. Sherman, Phillip H. Sheridan, George B. McClellan, Robert Todd Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, Thomas Edison, Sam Houston, William S. Rosecrans, Winfield S. Hancock, John Pope, James B. McPherson, and Fitz John Porter. The majority of the collection consists of signed cards; however, there are also approximately thirty-five letters and documents and a few clipped signatures. The collection was originally compiled by Reverend W. J. P. Ingraham in the 1860s and was later continued by his son, Austin F. Ingraham, until the latter's death in 1936.The collection is stored in a set of handsome leather albums which measure 10.5" x 11.75". Great care was taken when it was rehoused in the current albums using archival quality supplies. The autographs are held within acid-free sleeves and mounted with photo corners against archival paper. Each signature is accompanied by biographic and contextual information, and the albums contain extraordinarily detailed contents and index pages, with two pages of provenance information about the Ingraham family. Please visit our website for a complete list of the autographs.
Condition: Occasional example of soiling, toning and foxing.
