Description

Ulysses S. Grant War-Dated Autograph Letter Signed as Major General. One page, 7.75" x 9.75"; Holly Springs, Mississippi; December 24, 1862. A hurriedly written letter to General Charles Smith Hamilton. It reads: "Enclosed herewith I send you copies of dispatches just received from Col. [Benjamin] Grierson [unintelligible word] a little later from Grand Junction says fighting is now going on North of that place. It is probable therefore that the enemy are now turning their course South. The force at Salem should be informed of this fact and be on the lookout for them to give them a salute as they pass. Send notice at once." Signed, "U.S. Grant / Maj. Gen."

This letter was written just four days after Confederate General Earl Van Dorn's raid on Grant's major supply depot at Holly Springs. The raid represented a stunning defeat for Grant as countless wagons, railroad cars and buildings loaded with supplies were burned. After the raid, Van Dorn's troops moved north along the Mississippi Central Railroad leaving destruction in their wake.

Condition: The letter has mat burn, and scattered spotting. Purple staining is visible on the verso. Flattened folds, with soiling on verso.
