Description

George A. Custer Document Signed as Brevet Major General of the 7th Cavalry. One page, 8" x 9.75"; "Head Quarters of Troops operating South of the Arkansas Camp Supply. Ind. Terr."; March 29, 1869. Document reads: "The bearer, Trotter (Ses-sa is an Osage Warrior, He accompanied my command on the late winter's campaign and marches, and participated in the battle of the 'Washita'. / I believe him to be a good Indian, and a valuable scout and trailer." Signed "GA Custer", with Custer also filing in the name of "Trotter (Ses-sa."

The controversial Battle of Washita River was the first important battle won by federal forces during the Indian Wars, resulting in a large portion of the Southern Cheyenne forced onto reservations.

Condition: Separations along all folds have been repaired by having the full document backed with japan tissue. Bits of paper loss where folds intersect. Repaired fold intersects Custer's signature at the "A." Soiling throughout.
