Mrs. Jonnie Lockhart Wallis and Laurance L. Hill [editors]. Sixty Years on the Brazos, The Life and Letters of Dr. John Washington Lockhart 1824-1900. Los Angeles: Privately Printed, 1930. 8vo. 336 pages. Limited to 200 copies printed for relatives, descendants, and friends of Dr. John Washington Lockhart; this copy is not numbered. Photographs, including portrait frontispiece. Full blue ribbed cloth with gilt shield and blind rules to front board; gilt-stamped leather title label to spine. Blue-gray endpapers. Signatures by Jesse Farral, J.B. Robertson, and John W. Hall mounted on the title page. (Note: Signatures are variant from known exemplars of Confederate General Jerome B. Robertson and Old Three-Hundred-member John W. Hall; but ink and paper appear to be from their time.)A collection of Dr. John Washington Lockhart's essays, originally published in the Galveston News between 1893 and 1900. Lockhart was a prominent physician and plantation owner in Washington County who had known many great Texans, including Sam Houston, Ashbel Smith, Jack Hays, Edward Burleson, and David G. Burnet. Jenkins notes that "Lockhart's reminiscences about Houston -- who lived with the Lockharts when the Texas congress met at Washington-on-the-Brazos -- should be considered primary source material. Much on daily plantation life, pioneer medicine, camp meetings, frontier religion, Indian campaigns, etc."
Condition: The boards have been wrapped in plastic which is affixed with adhesive to the pastedowns, and has adhered to the cloth boards. Presentation inscription in modern ink on the front endpaper. Otherwise, interior pages are clean.
