Description

Benjamin Franklin Free Frank Signature and Stamp on a Cover Addressed in His Hand. 12" 7.25", addressed and signed "To William Greene Esq at Warwick/ Free / B Franklin". With a second cover, 5" x 6.25", addressed "To Mrs. Katy Ray at Westerly," with Franklin's red wax seal with his coat of arms below.

It is likely that the recipients were Rhode Island governor, William Greene, and his wife Catharine Ray Greene. Benjamin Franklin and Catharine Greene were close friends who corresponded for over thirty years, from 1755 until 1789.

Condition: Flattened folds and light toning. Dampstaining and soiling to the free franked leaf. Torn bottom edge with paper loss from the broken seal. Adhesive tape on verso of free franked leaf. The leaf with the wax seal has paper loss and small separations. Foxing throughout. Pencil notation at the bottom edge. Chipped edges. Mounting residue and staining on verso.
