Description

José Justo Corro Broadside Announcing the use of Privateers in the War Against Texas. Single printed sheet (in Spanish) with Secretary of the War and Navy heading, 8 3/8 x 11 9/10 inches; Mexico; May 2, 1836. Interim president José Justo Corro announces that the Congress has decreed (English translation): "The Government can employ for the service of national navy, frigate captain D. José Martinez, and the other individuals of the same origin, if there is need and they are worthy of trust, to end the war with the colonists of Texas, and to block contraband in the ports and shores of the Republic..." Promulgated by José Maria Tornel and signed in type at the conclusion.

Despite Texas' decisive victory at the Battle of San Jacinto less than two weeks earlier, Mexico did not formally recognize their independence and continued efforts to retake its lost territory. The newly born Republic was militarily weak and financially strained; harassment by privateers of their marine commerce would have been an effective means of maintaining pressure.

Condition: Bright paper, with a small stain at top right.
