Description
[Phillis Wheatley's "Farewell to America"]. The Massachusetts Gazette and The Boston Weekly News-Letter, May 13, 1773. Four pages, 9.25" x 14.5", Boston, Massachusetts; Thursday, May 13, 1773. Number 3632. Unpaginated. One of the earliest printings in America of Phillis Wheatley's poem, "Farewell to America." The poem is printed in one column and is found on page [4]. The introduction to the poem reads, "Saturday last Capt. [Robert] Calef sailed for London, in whom went Passengers Mr. Nathanial Wheatley, Merchant; also, Phillis, the extraordinary Negro Poet, Servant to Mr. John Wheatley."Lots 47004 through 47007 were obtained from a Phillis Wheatley collector. These four newspapers represent a lifetime of collecting, and to encounter all four newspapers in a single auction is highly uncommon. They are exceptionally rare, and this is the first time we have encountered any of these newspapers.
Condition: Trimmed close on top and bottom edges with some loss to text, not affecting Wheatley's poem. Some dampstaining and soiling throughout.
