Description
William Wordsworth. The Poetical Works...A new edition. London: Edward Moxon, 1849-50.6 volumes, 12mo (136 x 83 mm). Original publisher's red cloth, decorated in blind with diaper flower-and-rosette pattern on sides, spines decorated in gilt and blind, edges gilt.
PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WORDSWORTH on the half-title of Vol. I: "Thomas Gough / written by / William Wordsworth / Rydal Mount / 30th Novr 1849." Inscription in the crabbed hand of the poet's old age. The Cornell Catalogue lists two books on the Lake District by Gough (nos. 2043 and 2063).
Partially mounted on the front flyleaf in Vol. I is an autograph manuscript of 5-line verse in a firmer hand, beginning: "Life, I repeat, is energy of Love...", SIGNED "Wm Wordsworth / Rydal Mount / 1st Augst 1849." The folded sheet measures 116 x 183 mm, and is mounted on central panel to front flyleaf.
Condition: Spine of several volumes rebacked preserving original spines, others with some splits or repairs; some wear to spine ends and extremities; some rubbing and soiling; text block cracked at center of Vol. V; the occasional spot.
