Description
[Gilbert White]. The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne. London: Printed by T. Bensley; for B. White and Son, 1789.4to (250 x 188 mm). Large folding engraved frontispiece plate; two fly-titles with engraved vignettes; 6 engraved plates, including one folding; errata at end. Contemporary tree calf, spine gilt, with red morocco lettering-piece; handsome full white calf gilt pull-off case.
FIRST EDITION. Written by the English parson-naturalist and published by the author's brother, Benjamin, this work was immediately well received by contemporary critics and the public alike. White is considered among the founders of popular natural history and is acknowledged by modern ornithologists as one of the first observers to record detailed notes of birds and their habitats. With page 292 numbered 262, and pages 441-442 omitted from the pagination.
Condition: Rebacked preserving original spine; a few skillful repairs to extremities and boards. Some light spotting to plates; some offsetting from plates to facing text pages; a few stray spots on last leaves. Overall, a very clean and fresh copy.
