Charles Sealsfield was the pseudonym of an Austrian author named Anton Postl who spend much of his life traveling America. This is a reprint of Sealsfield's Texas novel which was originally printed in German in 1841. Raines points out that the novel is "sometimes called The cabin Book, or Sketches of Life in Texas, which is a better title, as it relates chiefly to events in Texas. 'A vivid picture if Texas and its society in early days, and during the war with Mexico.'"
