Description
Ezra Pound. Exultations. London: Elkin Mathews, 1909.Small 8vo. Device printed in red on title page. Publisher's red paper covered boards, spine and front board stamped in gilt; cloth slipcase.
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR in pencil on the half-title: "Certified / possession / of Ted Young / 30 Dec '47 / Ezra Pound / may he proceed to LXX - LXXI."
According to the bookseller's description, the present work was donated by Pound to Hamilton College (which he attended from 1901-1905). Hamilton College later sold the work to a Mr. Young, who had Pound inscribe this title while Pound was institutionalized at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C. "LXX - LXXI" refers to Pound's Cantos. Numbers LXX - LXXI are the China and Adams cantos, which explore the tenets of government - whether totalitarian or democratic. When Pound wrote the present inscription, he was hospitalized at St. Elizabeth's, a psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C. after having been arrested in Italy in 1945 by the U.S. Army for treason and deemed unfit to stand trial. The present copy with ink library call number on lower margin of title page, pencil notation to title page with the year Pound graduated from Hamilton, and pencil notation on the dedication page with the year the dedicatee (Carlos Tracy Chester) graduated from Hamilton.
Condition: Lower half of spine panel perished; some abrasions and staining to front board; some edgewear with corners rubbed; joints cracked; front joint just holding; minor staining to endpapers. Occasional spots throughout.
References: Gallup A4a.
Provenance: Ezra Pound, who donated the book to Hamilton College; sold by Hamilton College to Ted Young; purchased from J. Stephen Lawrence Rare Books, Chicago, in or around 1973. From the William A. Strutz Library.
