J. D. Salinger. The Catcher in the Rye. Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1951. First edition, stated on the copyright page, in the first state dust jacket. Octavo. 277, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine stamped in gilt; original illustrated first state dust jacket with the author's black and white photo credited to Lotte Jacobi on the rear panel. Corners just bumped, minor edgewear, head and foot of spine pushed, boards somewhat bowed. White endpapers; somewhat foxed, bookplate of Robert J. Vogel to the front pastedown, effaced pencil notations to the front free endpaper recto. Internally clean and tight; light foxing, chiefly to the front and back of the textblock and edges, minor text block edgewear. Dust jacket unclipped ($3.00, with the "$" over the body of the "R" in the title on the front flap); moderate edgewear, chipping to head and foot of spine and corners with some losses, spine sunned, creased along folds, rear fold at spine panel starting to split, front panel lightly creased, somewhat rubbed and soiled, affecting the author's name on the front panel, edges reinforced on verso with cellotape, tape adhesive dried and toned. Very good book with good dust jacket.
