First State of "Silas Phelps" Illustration

Mark Twain. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First American edition, first issue, with the following points: page [13], the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' is incorrectly listed as at p. 88 (BAL first state); page 57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads 'with the was' instead of 'with the saw' (BAL first state). With the suppressed first state of the illustration on page 283, with a curve indicating the fly on Silas Phelps's trousers. MacDonnell's first state of 'Huck Decided' instead of "Huck Decides" under "Chapter VI" on p. [9]. Octavo. 366 pages. Portrait frontispiece inserted with illustrated frontis and profuse intertextual illustrations by E. W. Kemble. Publisher's sheep boards, rebacked, red and black labels on spine. Rubbing, soiling, extremity wear, a bit of scuffing, minor loss to spine labels, red mark on rear cover, boards showing at corners, lower corners slightly bumped. Small black specks on fore-edge of textblock, toning and light chipping on edges of endpapers, hinges repaired with cloth adhesives, sporadic light to moderate soiling, small tear on upper edge of p. 253. Very good. BAL 3415. MacDonnell, Firsts Magazine, September, 1998.
