Description
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Complete set of proof sheets of Ultima Thule, annotated by the author. Boston: Houghton, Osgood and Company, 1880.19 oblong galley sheets, each measuring 8 ½ x 14 inches (215 x 353 mm), containing 60 pages of printed text pages printed on rectos only; fastened together by two original metal fasteners in left margin and folded in half; housed in a cloth chemise and full morocco pull-off case.
THE ORIGINAL CORRECTED PROOF SHEETS OF ULTIMA THULE. With Longfellow's pencil annotations throughout, including an added manuscript couplet to his poem "Robert Burns" on page 27, and numerous other corrections and punctuation marks. Ultima Thule was the last book of Longfellow's published during his lifetime.
Laid in is a one-page note written in the hand of Mr. P. K. Foley, reading: "The author's personal copy--proof sheets--with new reading in his Ms. of a couplet ('Robert Burns' p. 27), and pencilled corrections (punctuation, etc.)." Stephen Wakeman has added a note, "Presented to Charlotte Fiske Bates by Longfellow."
Condition: Some toning to outer blank verso with some pale stains; some other light soiling or toning; minor edgewear.
Provenance: Charlotte Fiske Bates (according to Wakeman's pencil notation on Foley note); Stephen H. Wakeman (his sale, 28 April 1924, lot 768). From the William A. Strutz Library.
