Description
John Wesley. Autograph letter signed ("JWesley"), to [Samuel] Bardsley. Otley [July 1789?].One page, 4to (186 x 150 mm), on a bifolium, with integral address leaf; cloth folding case.
Bardsley was a good pastor and a powerful speaker held in high esteem and affection by John Wesley with whom he often corresponded. He was one of a hundred preachers named in the 1784 Deed of Declaration, although it is curious to note that Wesley never appears to have appointed him to the office of assistant, except for his time in the Bideford circuit where he was the only preacher.
In full:
"My Dear Brother, I am glad to hear so good an account of the work of God at Bideford. That town had held out long and seemed to bid defiance to the gospel. But if we are not weary of well-doing we shall reap in due time. I should hardly have expected any increase of the work of God in Launceston; but probably it will be enlarged by your preaching in the Town Hall: for many will come thither who would not come to our preaching-house. As long as you and your fellow labourers converse freely together and act by united counsels the work of the Lord will prosper in your hands. And continue instant in prayer, particularly in your closet. I am, dear Sammy, Your affectionate Brother JWesley."
Condition: A little toning; creased at folds; a few tiny separations at folds; address panel soiled; address leaf with a few small holes from previous mounting, and a few discreet reinforcements at fold intersections.
