Description
[Oliver Wendell Holmes]. The Collegian. No. I[-VI]. Cambridge: Published by Hilliard and Brown, 1830.6 numbers in 5 volumes (all published), 8vo. Original gray printed wrappers, uncut; quarter morocco folding case.
FIRST EDITION of Holmes first substantial contribution of poems (containing some thirty of his poems), having only previously published two or three pieces written and published a few months earlier. There is one copy known of the 4th part singly (here as double number 4/5). It was suppressed because it was printed on poor paper.
EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN ORIGINAL PARTS: According to online auction records, the present copy is the only copy to appear at auction since it appeared in the Stockhausen sale in 1974 (prior to that a complete set in wrappers sold in 1935 at the B. George Ulizio sale). George Ives notes his bibliography: "the compiler has been unable to place a set of the original numbers, although he is informed that such sets are in existence."
Condition: Some minor chipping and fraying to wrappers, with spines of 3 parts slightly defective and a few chips at corners; some spotting and fading to covers. Some slight foxing; a little fraying or curling to some uncut edges.
