Robert Louis Stevenson. Autograph manuscript working draft of a portion of his unfinished novel "St. Ives." [c.1896-7].One page, 4to (288 x 222 mm; 11 3/8 x 8 3/4 inches). Written in dark brown or black ink on faintly ruled sheet of wove paper. Housed in a cloth folding case.
ORIGINAL WORKING MANUSCRIPT DRAFT OF A PORTION OF "ST. IVES." Comprising 12 lines written in neat cursive, with numerous insertions and deletions. The sheet headed with page number "86," and appears to be from Chapter XII. The Beinecke collection has other scattered portions of the manuscript, including ones headed "87," "88" and "93," and are described as being an early version.
Stevenson's unfinished novel, St. Ives: Being the Adventures of a French Prisoner in England, was first published in the U.S. in 1897. Arthur Quiller-Couch completed he novel in 1898, and it was published in England that same year. Stevenson dictated thirty chapters to his stepdaughter due to illness. He worked on both St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston, but eventually stopped working on the former.
Accompanied by 3 printed Robert Louis Stevenson calling cards from Skerryvore, and a small photographic reproduction of the jubilee birthday celebration held for Robert Louis Stevenson reproducing images of Vailima and his gravesite.
Condition: Creased at folds; some minor spotting and soiling.
