Description

Michael Shaara. The Killer Angels. New York: David McKay Company, Inc., [1974].

8vo. Original two-toned cloth-textured boards, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket.

FIRST EDTION of Michael Shaara's critically acclaimed Civil War novel, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975. Historian James M. McPherson describes the book as "a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg. But its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant." Praised for its historical authenticity, The Killer Angels captures the human story behind the pivotal three-day battle of the Civil War. The novel inspired the 1993 film Gettysburg, starring Tom Berenger and Martin Sheen, and influenced Ken Burns' series The Civil War (1990).

Condition: Head of spine a little pushed and slightly rubbed; extremities very lightly rubbed, otherwise fine. Dust jacket unclipped (priced "$8.95"), with very slight crease and tiny tear and split at head of spine panel, touch of wear to flap fold extremities. Overall, a very fine copy.

Provenance: From the William A. Strutz Library.
