Description

Flannery O'Connor. Wise Blood. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1952].

8vo. Publisher's yellow cloth, spine stamped in gray. Original color pictorial dust jacket.

FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper: "For Mrs. Gertrude S. Hughs / Regards from / Flannery O'Connor / May 1952."

Wise Blood was published in May of 1952, and the present copy was inscribed by its author that same month. Later that summer, O'Connor was diagnosed with Lupus. Though she lived longer than doctors expected, O'Connor passed away in 1964, shortly before her 40th birthday. As a result, books signed or inscribed by O'Connor are quite rare, especially this, her first book.

Condition: Touch of edgewear to cloth. Dust jacket decoratively clipped as issued, price intact ($3.00), spine sunned, jacket toned, a few scuffs and soiling, and some edgewear including chips and a few short tears, small tape repair to verso.

Provenance: Gertrude S. Hughes (presentation inscription); acquired from Bauman Rare Books, Philadelphia & New York, acquisition date unknown. From the William A. Strutz Library.
