John Milton. Paradise Regain'd. A Poem. In IV Books. To which is added Samson Agonistes. London: Printed by J.M. for John Starkey, 1671.2 parts in one volume, 8vo (176 x 114 mm). License leaf preceding general title, section title to second part, and errata leaf (P4) at end. Contemporary blind-ruled mottled sheep, spine gilt-ruled, gilt-lettered morocco lettering piece on spine.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with misprint "loah" for "loth" on p. 67. Paradise Regained is a shorter work than its predecessor, consisting of only four books. It serves as a direct sequel and complement to Paradise Lost, focusing on the later years of Jesus' life, specifically his temptation in the wilderness by Satan. Through Jesus' triumph over Satan's temptations, Milton emphasizes the power of faith, spiritual strength, and the possibility of redemption.
Condition: Spine rubbed, with a crack and small hole near head of lower joint; hinges cracked. Paper flaw or tear on lower corner of M6 in second part crossing catchword and one line of text; some early early annotations on "The Persons" list at beginning of second part; early letters inked or branded on errata verso with some discoloration showing through to recto. A very fresh and crisp copy.
