Description

Kenneth Grahame. The Wind in the Willows. London: Methuen and Co., [1908].

8vo. Frontispiece by Graham Robertson. Original pictorial blue-green cloth stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut.

FIRST EDITION of one of the most iconic children's books of all time. "What had emerged [from Grahame's bedtime stories to his son Alistair] was no lighthearted story about a countryside community of animals but a long and ramifying fable... the London publisher had been dubious about accepting so unclassifiable a book, putting it on his adult rather than his juvenile list, and many reviewers were also baffled as to its likely readership" (Grolier, Children's).

Condition: Slight wear to spine ends; minor rubbing to joints and extremities; covers a little discolored (lightened) from damp; some dampstaining to upper corners on pastedowns; some toning to endpapers (as often). Minor pale spotting to frontispiece and title with a small dampstain at head of title; deckle edges a bit toned.

Provenance: Purchased from Charles Rare Books, London, 27 August 1962. From the William A. Strutz Library.
