Kenneth Grahame. The Golden Age. London: John Lane, 1896.8vo. Half-title; with12 pp. publisher's advertisements at end, dated 1896. Original yellow buckram cloth, covers and spine pictorially stamped in dark blue, uncut; quarter morocco slipcase.
Sixth edition. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO PUBLISHER JOHN LANE'S FUTURE WIFE, on the front free endpaper: "Anna Eichberg King / with friendly greetings from / Kenneth Grahame / 10 Septr. 1897." Anna Eichberg King was a Swiss-born Boston author, who was the daughter of the distinguished violinist and composer Julius Eichberg. She was a writer of short stories and poems, who married publisher John Lane in 1898. Some of her more notable works include: Brown's Retreat, and Other Stories (1893); Kitwyck Stories (1895), American Wives and English Housekeeping (1905), as well as the lyrics for the national hymn "To Thee, O Country!" (1918).
This collection of stories is Grahame's second published book. The Golden Age was first published in 1895 and was an immediate success. It sold out quickly causing John Lane to reprint it immediately, while making the author virtually famous overnight. A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION.
Condition: Cloth soiled; hinges cracked or starting; spine sunned. Some minor marginal toning.
