3 volumes, 8vo. 3 engraved frontispiece portraits; 2 double-page maps, facsimile plate. Original blindstamped brown cloth, gilt-lettered and decorated on spines.

Second American edition. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO PUBLISHER CHARLES C. LITTLE on the front free endpaper of Vol. I: "C. C. Little / from his friend / W. H. Prescott / May 1845." Charles Cushing Little was a partner in the publishing firm C. C. Little and J. Brown, which published some of Prescott's works. The first edition was published in London by Bentley in 1843, preceding the first American edition by about six weeks the same year.

Condition: Some chipping to spine ends and joints, corners worn through to boards, a few bumps at edges, the cloth and gilt very bright. Some minor foxing to endpapers, some plates and tissue guards.
