Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The Courtship of Miles Standish, and Other Poems. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1858.8vo. 12-page publisher's advertisements dated October 1858 at end. Original brown cloth, blind-embossed on sides, gilt-lettered on spine; cloth slipcase.
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, on the day of publication on the verso of the front free endpaper: "Mrs. Palfrey / with best regards / of the Author. / October 16. 1858."
Longfellow's celebrated narrative poem about the early days of Plymouth Colony and tells the story of a love triangle between Puritan captain Miles Standish, his roommate John Alden, and the clever maiden Priscilla Mullins. Longfellow's ballad was extremely successful both in America and England. It was published on October 16, 1858, and sold 25,000 copies in two months. The first printing contains the line "The revel of the treacherous wine" on p. 124; the single-leaf advertisement for the Waverly Novels found in some copies is not present here, as usual.
The recipient of this copy was Mary Ann (Hammond) Palfrey, the wife of the Harvard Professor of Sacred Literature, historian and member of Congress, John Gorham Palfrey (1796-1881).
Condition: Spine ends chipped and worn; joints worn through in a few places along upper joint; corners worn with boards exposed; hinges cracked. Faint dampstain to upper margin on title and front flyleaf; some light toning; occasional light spotting.
