Candide. New York: Random House, 1928. Limited to
ninety-five numbered copies, hand-colored in the studio of the
artist, this being number thirty-one, and signed by Rockwell
Kent. Octavo. [112] pages. Publisher's quarter morocco over
decorative cloth over boards, top edge gilt. Housed in a
contemporary slipcase and custom protective box. Slipcase with
light edgewear. Spine slightly darkened, a bit of rubbing, front
hinge over-opened and starting, bookplate on front free endpaper,
minor scattered foxing on front and rear flyleaves. Accompanied by
prospectus as well as a hand-colored example of the illustration of
Dr. Pangloss and the maid. Illustration is matted with several
cellophane tape adhesives on verso. Very good."In 1928, Random House commissioned the great American artist Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) to illustrate Voltaire's Candide as the first book under its imprint." (NYPL: Rockwell Kent's Candide).
