Émile Deschamps and Antoine Deschamps. Autograph Manuscript Poems Signed. "Emile Deschamps." "Antoine Deschamps." One page in French on stiff paper with engraved religious drawing showing an image of Jesus Christ being worshipped, 9.25" x 11.25", n.p.; n.d. The poems are translated into English.

Poem by Emile:
"Poetry, alas, is nothing in and of itself// Until, in a heart touched by supreme grace,//it awakens kind love.//It is Galatea opening her marble eyes to the day;//For her to live, we must love her!"
Poem by Antoine
"No, Jesus, it is not your divine promise//That makes me adore you, Oh, Christ, it is your chest//Your poor arms all poked with nails//It is your dripping brow all covered with blows//And without your Heaven, without even hope,//I would love you still, Lord, as much as I already do!"

[Together with:]

Émile de Saint-Amand Deschamps (1791-1871) was a French poet and one of the leaders of the Romantic school. He wrote the text for the choral symphony Roméo et Juliette composed by Hector Berlioz in 1839.

Antoine-François-Marie Deschamps (1800-1869) was a French poet, younger brother of Émile Deschamps, and a disciple of Victor Hugo.
His partial verse translation of the Dante's Divine Comedy, published in 1829, earned him some fame.

Condition: Manuscript poems have horizontal fold at center; paper is toned and foxed, some rubbing at edge; otherwise very good. Letter is a bit toned, edges not cut square, some edge wear, with two holes near center (not affecting text). Fair.
