Galley proofs for the true first appearance of The Old Man and the Sea in LIFE magazine, signed by Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway. "The Old Man and the Sea." [New
York: Life Magazine, 1952].17 full galley sheets (32 x 9 inches), numbered Galley 1-16, and with the unnumbered title sheet. Galleys 1-15 stapled together, Galley 16 now loose, gathered in one section and folded in half. Rubber stamp: "Advance Galley Proofs" on title sheet; rubber stamp with a finger pointing to the text that reads: "Advance Galley Proofs / For Your Personal Reading Only / LIFE Publication Date, Sept. 1" in upper margin of Galley 1. Custom slipcase, gilt-stamped morocco labels, cloth chemise.
GALLEY PROOF SHEETS FOR THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, SIGNED BY HEMINGWAY on the title sheet "Ernest Hemingway."
The Old Man and the Sea was published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, on September 8, 1952. Eleven days in advance of the book's publication, the full text of this 27,000-word novella appeared in twenty pages of LIFE, XXXIII (Sept. 1, 1952). Hanneman records that LIFE distributed 5,000 sets of advance galley proofs of this story for promotional purposes.
Condition: Paper toned and a bit brittle, a few minor chips and short tears, a few wrinkles and folds. A very well-preserved copy, rarely found signed.
