Description

Tom Lea. The Wonderful Country. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, [1952].

8vo. Illustrated by the author. Original pictorial cloth, spine lettered in red, top edge stained red; publisher's white illustrated dust jacket. Housed in a special drop-back cloth box made by Carl Hertzog (see below).

FIRST EDITION, SPECIAL LIMITED ISSUE, one of only ten copies specially housed in a box containing a mounted print signed by Tom Lea, and additionally INSCRIBED BY LEA on the title-page: "Tom Lea / El Paso." The box specially made by Carl Hertzog contains the following printed statement on the inside: "Inside the box is a printed statement which reads: "Ten copies of the first edition of The Wonderful Country have been especially boxed with a print of the painting by Tom Lea Recuerdo de Lágrimas now owned by H. Frank Connally of Waco." Accompanied by a letterpress sheet from Hertzog printed at the University of Texas at El Paso discussing the painting from which the print comes. The Wonderful Country is among A. C. Greene's 50 Best Books on Texas (1981), and James Ward Lee's Classics of Texas Fiction (1987).

Condition: Slightest hint of age-toning to spine; rear upper corner slightly bumped. Dust jacket price-clipped (presumably indicating it was not part of the normal issue price), and apparently printed on a finer paper than ordinary copies - or it is just immaculate.

Provenance: From the William A. Strutz Library.
