Together, 2 volumes, 8vo. Full polished calf, spines gilt, gilt-lettered morocco lettering-pieces on spines, edges gilt, by De Coverly.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of Elia, with the imprint having only the single Fleet Street address. FIRST ENGLISH EDITON of The Last Essays, preceded by an unauthorized edition printed in Philadelphia in 1828 under the title Elia... Second Series. Lamb's classic series of essays, dealing with "mankind at large as seen through the medium of Lamb's own experiences and impressions... [presented] with exquisite humour and pathos, and in a brilliant and inimitable style" (Oxford Companion to English Literature).

Condition: A few stains to boards; spines rubbed and worn with some chipping at ends; rear joint of Vol. I cracked, other joints rubbed; hinges tender or starting. Lacking half-title in Last Essays (not called for in Elia); bound without advertisements at end of each volume.
