Description
The Spoor-Chrysler copy in original printed wrappers
Nathaniel Hawthorne. Mosses from an Old Manse. New
York and London: Wiley and Putnam, 1846.2 volumes, 12mo. Half-titles. Original buff printed wrappers, untrimmed; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with both Craighead and Smith imprints on verso of title-pages in both volumes. Hawthorne's second major work of short stories, which comprise Nos. XVII and XVIII of Wiley and Putnam's Library of American Books.
The wrappers in this copy conform with BAL's state A, with the advertisements on the outside rear wrappers both listing 18 volumes in the series, and Clark's first state of the upper and inside lower wrappers and third state for the outside rear wrappers (only one copy each of States 1 and 2 of the rear outside wrapper has been reported). Clark comments: "States of the wrappers are significant as binding variants only and should not be considered in assigning a priority to the printing of the text to which they are bound."
RARE IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS.
Condition: Both parts rebacked, preserving most of the original letterpress portions of the backstrips (but with loss of the letters "Part II" on the second part, and half of the first letter "M" on the first part); small section of upper wrapper repaired on Part II (obscuring a few letters of the address at head); a few other small chips or repaired tears; some other wear (corners a bit rounded) and soiling to covers. Some minor marginal chips through careless opening; some pale marginal dampstains towards end of Part II; occasional minor stains or pale foxing.
References: BAL 7598; Clarke A15.1.a1; Wilson 138.
Provenance: John A. Spoor (bookplates; his sale, 26 April 1939, lot 414); Walter J. Chrysler, Jr. (bookplates; his sale, Parke-Bernet, 7 December 1954, lot 159); purchased from John F. Fleming, Inc., New York, 1980. From the William A. Strutz Library.
