FIRST EDITION of the principal expressions of Emerson's transcendental philosophy. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY EMERSON on the half-title: "Dr. James Jackson / With Mr. Emerson's Respects." Dr. James Jackson (1777-1867) was a prominent Boston physician, noted especially for being the first in America to scientifically investigate inoculation for smallpox. He was also one of the founders of Massachusetts General Hospital, of which he was the first physician until he resigned in 1835. Among his students was Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., who married his brother Charles' daughter, Amelia Lee Jackson.

Condition: Rebacked in later morocco; minor wear to extremities; spine a little dried. Endpapers lightly toned; evidence of removed letter along gutter of front flyleaf (with short marginal tear). Internally, a very fresh, clean copy.
