Description

William Cullen Bryant. Autograph manuscript signed ("W. C. Bryant") of his poem "A Poet to His Wife." Roslyn, 1873.

2 pages, folio (317 x 202 mm), written in dark brown ink on recto and verso of a single sheet of ruled paper.

Comprising the original manuscript of his uncompleted poem of 32 lines in eight stanzas, titled at head and signed and dated vertically at top of the sheet. The poem begins:

"The morn hath not the glory that it wore,
Nor doth the day so beautifully die,
Since I can call thee to my side no more,
To gaze upon the sky."

Following the eighth stanza, he apparently begins a new stanza and trails off: "Oh, when I---".

This long heartfelt poem, which speaks of the memory of his wife following her death, was first published from this manuscript in Century Magazine in March 1883 with the note: "The reader of Mr. Bryant's poems will readily remember the many verses addressed to his wife... We learn from Mr. Godwin's forthcoming biography of the poet, a fragment was found among his paper, which recalls her memory in a very tender way, seven years after her death. The lines were unfinished and uncorrected, but we cannot refrain from giving them as they were written - date Roslyn 1873."

Condition: Some separations at folds; some toning to folds and sheet edges.

Provenance: Purchased from The 19th Century Shop, 7 February 2007. From the William A. Strutz Library.
