Description

Sir Thomas Browne. Pseudodoxia Epidemica; or, Enquiries into very many received Tenents, and commonly presumed Truths. London: Printed by T. H. for Edward Dod, and are to be sold in Ivie Lane, 1646.

7 parts in one volume, folio (268 x 178 mm). Title within double-ruled border, imprimatur (A1v) dated "March the 14th 1645" and signed "Iohn Dovvname," and text within ruled border with blank marginal column for side-notes, headpieces composed of printer's ornaments, woodcut initials. Contemporary blind-ruled English speckled calf, morocco lettering-piece on spine, edges stained in red; cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION of Browne's most considerable work. Keynes comments on the two alternative imprints, and the present copy gives the Ivie Lane address in the third line. "Of the alternative imprints it seems that the shorter and less usual one is likely to be the earlier. The rest of the title-page was printed from the same setting of type in each, so that the change was probably made while the book was in the press. There is no other alteration" (Keynes).

Condition: A little wear to joints with short split at head of upper joint; corners a little bumped and worn; hinges cracked, but holding. Lacking final blank leaf (Bbb6); title leaf stained at center and top; leaf a2 (To the Reader) and following two preliminary leaves (a3-4) with minor dampstaining at upper margin; internal tear (paper flaw?) on b2 in the Table; short tears on lower margins of A1 and Ll1; one or two marginal chips; a very few minor marginal spots or stains. Despite the flaws mentioned, internally quite clean and fresh.
