Description
[Sir Thomas Browne]. Religio, medici. [London]: Andrew Crooke, 1642.8vo (135 x 75 mm). Collation: Π1 A-M8. Engraved title-page by William Marshal; with the final blank leaf M8. Modern calf; quarter morocco folding case.
FIRST UNAUTHORISED EDITION, of Browne's first and most celebrated work. Browne's Religio Medici describes "the religion and philosophy of a tolerant, humorous and latitudinarian mind" (DSB). Browne, a doctor by profession, had an active interest in a wide range of subjects, from archeology and philosophy to physics and biology. Religio Medici, his first published work, was a philosophical tract as much as a religious one, a Platonist's contemplation on the world. Its publication met mixed reactions; in Paris it was published by a Roman Catholic; in Rome it was listed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. "Crooke issued two editions dated 1642. They have always been termed 'unauthorized' because, after the publication of Digby's Observations, Dr. Browne considerably amended this text and Crook published that altered form in 1643, with addresses referring to the 'former corrupt Copy... which was most imperfectly and surreptitiously published before'. From the fact that Crooke was allowed to continue as publisher of the 'authorized' edition it would seem that he was forgiven" (Pforzheimer 111). Of these two 1642 editions, the present copy contains 96 leaves, while the other has only 81 leaves.
Condition: Title-page a little browned and soiled; short tear (or paper flaw) on lower margin E2; rust hole on lower margin of H3; occasional marginal dampstaining; some soiling and toning.
References: Grolier, English 26 (Greenhill's issue A, as here); Grolier, Wither to Prior 104; Keynes, Browne 1; Pforzheimer 112; Wing B5167.
Provenance: From the William A. Strutz Library.
