Description

Maurice Sendak. Where the Wild Things Are. New York: Harper & Row, 1963. First edition, first printing, first issue, complete with first printing dust jacket. Quarto (9 x 10 inches; 229 x 254 mm). Unpaginated (18 leaves in addition to title page). Illustrated throughout by Sendak. Publisher's pictorial paper covered boards over grey cloth spine; front and back cover slightly toned. Scarce first printing dust jacket, with all first printing points, including no mention of Caldecott award or award sticker on the front, which was added by publisher after recalling the edition to reflect the achievement shortly after publication; the $3.50 price on the front flap of jacket, along with the code "40-80" and "1163" indicating the publishing date of November 1963; and the original three paragraph blurbs on the front and back jacket flaps. The book itself shows the Library of Congress number "63-21253" on the title page and has no ISBN number on the rear board. A very good copy, with colorful pictorial endpapers. A "Books Are Fun" sticker, with child's signature, appears on front pastedown, and a child's signature appears on half-title page. Small tear at bottom of front free endpaper, a few spots on rear endpapers, and light shelf wear. The front flap is clipped at the lower corner, typical of all copies, and light chipping to jacket, with a discreet closed tear at top center. Overall, the copy is in very good condition.

A rare first edition, first printing, and first issue of Sendak's most famous children's book.
