Description

The superb Greenhill-Martin copy in original boards

Robert Burns. Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. Edinburgh: Printed for the Author, 1787.

8vo. Aquatint frontispiece portrait of Burns after Alexander Naysmith. Original blue-gray paper-covered boards, with cream-colored paper spines, printed spine label, uncut and partially unopened; full morocco pull-off case.

SECOND (FIRST EDINBURGH) EDITION. The Edinburgh edition is an enlarged collection of Burns' verse, with over twenty-two poems here appearing for the first time. The lengthy subscriber list testifies to his growing popularity and the great demand for copies, which required the printer to reset and reprint the majority of the half-sheets to come up to the revised print run of 3,000 copies. This copy contains the first issue settings of these quires, with "Boxburgh" for "Roxburgh" in the list of subscribers (p. xxxvii), "o" for "of" on p. 9, line 2, and "skinking" correctly set on line 13 of page 263 (Ii4r).

Condition: Joints starting to crack, but holding firm; a few slight stains to spine. A few leaves roughly opened; text block cracked at center; one or two short marginal tears. Overall, an exceptionally fine, fresh copy in nearly pristine original boards.

References: Egerer 2; Rothshild 556; Tinker 453; Sterling 103.

Provenance: Gen. Robert Cunningham, Dublin (with early gift inscription to him on flyleaf and one on title which reads: "Ald Lang Syne / Should ald aquantance be forgot / A D to G R C"); Harold Greenhill (bookplate); H. Bradley Martin (bookplate; his sale, 30 April 1990, lot 2681); purchased from Ximenes Rare Books, Inc., New York, 1990. From the William A. Strutz Library.
