1844.12mo. Half-title, advertisements on the verso of the contents page, with initial and terminal blanks. Original printed tan wrappers, entirely uncut; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION. This is the first title in the Home Library Poetical Series, a series conceived by members of the American Copyright Club, headed by Bryant, with the purpose of protecting American authors from cheap foreign competition. Their solution was mass production, and this work was the first of a projected series to include both prose and poetical works, each number priced at twelve and a half cents. No. 1 of the Poetical Series was Bryant's The White-Footed Deer and Other Poems. This is Goodspeed's Variant A, with the words "Home Library" with publisher's imprint on front wrapper, and publisher's advertisements on the back wrapper.
VERY RARE: The only other copy recorded at auction in the last 50 years is the Bruce M. Lisman copy, sold Christie's New York, 16 June 2023, lot 235, sold for $4,410.
Condition: Very slight wear to backstrip with tiny losses at the base; minor rubbing or chipping at edges; a few minor creases. Two slight chips to upper blank margin on p. [1] through careless opening; a few words supplied in pen on p. 20 where they had been printed defectively; occasional very light spotting. Overall, a very fine copy of a scarce work in original wrappers.
