Description

A Beautiful Example of Nineteenth-Century American Folk Art

Susan B. Morris. Manuscript Book of Poetry with Twenty-Nine Original Watercolor Vignettes of Flowers, Plants, and Other Subjects. [Kingston, N. Y., ca. 1850's]. Quarto. Approximately 10.75 x 8.25 inches. Thirty-nine pages with manuscript calligraphy (a few with simple calligraphic practice, most of the rest with apparently original poetry signed by the author). Of these thirty-nine pages of calligraphy, twenty-nine of them are adorned with original watercolors. There are some additional blank pages. Rebound by the author/artist's granddaughter in the 1940's in full black patterned silk. Some toning to pages, one calligraphic page (without watercolor) loose. A fine example of excellent and assured folk art from the mid-nineteenth century, showcasing the artist's deft hand and attention to minute detail. From the collection of Zita Books.
