FIRST EDITION. W. H. AUDEN'S COPY OF THIS WORK ON EARLY POETRY WITH PENCILED NOTES IN AUDEN'S HAND CONTAINING AN EARLY DRAFT OF A PORTION (PART THREE) OF WHAT WOULD BECOME HIS POEM "THE AGE OF ANXIETY" FOR WHICH HE WON THE PULITZER PRIZE IN 1948. ALSO WITH A PENCILED PORTION OF "THE ORATORS" (Journal of an Airman). With penciled annotations throughout, including runic symbols in the margins, presumably in Auden's hand.

Condition: Binding worn and rubbed, stain to rear cover, spine ends pushed and frayed, cracked before the second, fourth, and fifth gatherings. Text with pale spotting throughout, some scattered soiling.

Provenance: W. H. Auden (purported gift from one of his collaborators in the translations from the Icelandic; Auden traveled to Iceland in 1936 with Louis MacNeice, which the pair documented in the book Letters from Iceland, published in 1937). From the William A. Strutz Library.
