Description
Matthew Arnold. New Poems. London: Macmillan and Co., 1867.8vo. Publisher's green cloth, spine stamped in gilt front board double-ruled in gilt, rear board double-ruled in blind.
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS LIFE-LONG FRIEND WILLIAM CHARLES LAKE on the half-title: "W. C. L. / in grateful remembrance."
William Charles Lake (1817-1897) was a life-long friend of Matthew Arnold, having met the budding poet when both attended Rugby, where Arnold's father was headmaster. Both men attended Oxford and traveled in the same intellectual circles. Lake later became Dean of Durham.
Condition: Light wear and a few small stains to cloth; spine ends pushed; corners just rubbed. Front hinge cracked but holding; rear hinge starting; binder's ticket to rear pastedown. A few scattered spots to textblock.
