[Texas Rangers]. Republic of Texas Auditor's Certificate. One page, 5.5" x 3.75", Austin, Texas, December 3, 1841, No. 128, by the Republic of Texas certifying a balance due of $630 "for fuel & quarters as Quarter Master " to Quartermaster R[obert] S. Neighbors, later a Texas Ranger serving under Jack Hays. Slight ink smudging to "Cancelled."More Information:
Only nine months after being issued this auditor's certificate, Robert Neighbors (1815-1859), by then a member in John Coffee Hays' Ranger unit of volunteers, was captured during General Adrian Woll's invasion of Texas and taken as a prisoner to Mexico. He was released in 1844.
Five years later, Neighbors worked with Rip Ford to chart a route through west Texas for immigrants moving toward California. Neighbors and Ford, along with their entourage, made the 1160 mile round trip from San Antonio to El Paso and back in fifty-five days, becoming fast friends while opening the important El Paso route. In the late 1850s, the two worked toward solving the Texas Indian problem, which included the Antelope Hills Expedition in 1858.
